SOG Specialty Knives & Tools E37S-K Seal Pup Elite Straight Knife with Kydex Sheath, Black TiNi

I own several SOG knives and this is no exception ….. GREAT.
Pro: Holds an edge, easy to sharpen, secure carry case
Cons: Handle is a little small for large hands, hard to draw when hung upside down from my gear.

For starters I’ve handled a lot of high quality knives. For what this knife it’s excellent. I’m tired of seeing reviews that amount to “good knife” “bad knife”. I’ve been testing this over the past week. It’s made out of AUS 8 steel. This tends to be the best metal for survival situations while the edge doesn’t hold as long it’s super easy to sharpen. The nylon sheath rides higher than it should during belt carry when rigged normally. I fixed this by rigging the snap through the last MOLLE strap rides nicely now. Sturdy tang will stand up to prying well. Edge geometry doesn’t get much better. The jigged spine cuts through wood very well. The jiggs also cut through copper and other soft metals I’ve not tried anything harder but in a pinch it would probably work. It is manufactured in Taiwan but it’s still up to U.S. quality control standards. There were models manufactured out of japan they were of inferior metal. SOG has slipped a lot through the years but this really is a dependable knife. Oh yea the glass reinforced handle is excellent it is in no way cheap.

What can I say? This is a great knife for the cost! The pup elite is a beefed up version of the pup, and well worth the slight increase in price. Fixed blade, full tang, AUS 8 steel (decent toughness and edge-holding), decent handle, decently sized blade. The knife handles great, and I am satisfied with it.
Although I haven’t used it extensively yet (as in “drop me off in the middle of the jungle” use), I’d say it’d would work well enough in a survival situation. I purchased the straight edge for my belt knife, since there aren’t enough serrations to make them really useful. So far it’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it.
The nylon sheath provided is great if you want to carry a leatherman or SAK as well. I’ve fit a SAK Rucksack or a Leatherman Wave in there. The kydex sheath (sold separately) is a better sheath if you’re looking for easy deployment, smaller size, and more rigging options. The knife is slightly easier to unsheathe one-handed and quickly from the kydex sheath, but it really doesn’t take much more effort using the nylon one. My pup used to rattle slightly in the kydex sheathe, but I’ve made adjustments to the sheath and it rattles no more (see sog site for sheath adjustment).
Overall, decent knife. Sure it’s not a Fallkniven, Busse, RAT, or BRKT…but for the price, it’s not too shabby. But then again, if you’re interested in a cheap survival knife, you could always go get a Mora….
